In the last home meet of the season the University of New Mexico’s swimming and diving team fell to New Mexico State, 158-142 and Wyoming, 195-105. Five seniors, Sasha Evangulova, Alexandra Lusk, Ashley Grisdale, Bridget O’Hara and Jennifer Patterson, competed in Seidler Natatorium for their final time.
“It was a fantastic meet,” said head coach Tracy Ljone. “We gave New Mexico State a fun for their money. It was obviously a close meet that was spurred on by amazing performances from Jennifer Patterson. Marissa Campbell also was key with her position as the anchor in the freestyle relay. I am really excited about what I saw in this meet and am proud of the girls.”
Patterson had a stellar showing for the Lobos in the 200-yard butterfly where she captured first-place with a time of 2:06.91. She was followed in fifth by Nanette Wittenberg (2:11.16). In the 100-yard butterfly Patterson also finished first (57.38) with Grisdale following in third (58.54). Marissa Campbell also secured a victory for the Lobos in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 57.81. In the 100-yard freestyle Campbell finished second (53.20).
On the boards Ashlee Erickson led the competition on the 1-meter dive with a mark of 268.60. Aubrey Bush captured second-place on the 3-meter dive, scoring 273.45. She was followed by Alexandra Evangulova in third (272.60).
The Lobos were successful in the distance events as Maria Dudley finished in second-place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:39.59. She was followed in third-place by Jennifer Burgess (10:49.07). In the 500-yard freestyle Dudley also picked up a second-place finish when she touched the wall in 5:11.52. In fourth was O’Hara with a time of 5:16.21.
Campbell captured second-place in the 100-yard freestyle with at time of 53.20. Another second-place finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Patterson, O’Hara, Wittenberg and Campbell (3:32.64).
Jocelyn Colella picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a final time of 2:10.40. Another top-five finish for the Lobos came in the 200-yard medley relay with a line-up consisting of Colella, O’Hara, Grisdale and Patterson (1:50.71).
New Mexico is now 3-7 on the season, 1-4 in Mountain West Conference action. The Lobos will travel to Long Beach, Calif. Nov. 19-22 for the Toshiba Classic hosted by UCSD. The meet is previously known as the Nike Invitational.
