ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.–The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team closed out the regular season with a resounding 2-0 victory over the visiting UNLV Rebels tonight, in a game that doubled as Senior Night. Sophomore Michael Green scored both goals in the win, striking less than four minutes into the game to put the Lobos ahead early on. Green padded the New Mexico lead with a second goal in the 66th minute to set the final score.
“It was a good win,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We got the early goal and I thought we were really good in the first fifteen minutes. We had a chance to put a couple in, and got a nice goal from Mike Green. They’re a hard team to play against — they really didn’t look to connect any passes, they just looked to knock it and pick up seconds. I thought we were excellent in the second half. We got into a rhythm, we connected our passes, and got another great goal from Green.”
Green took a pass from Stephen Brown inside the box and netted the game-winner at 3:56, then had a breakaway shot that found the right corner of the net at 66:05. He took a flick from Justin Davis and beat two players on the dribble for the second strike. With the goals, Green ratcheted up the scoring charts for the Lobos and now sits second on the team in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists.
The win secures the second seed for the Lobos in the upcoming Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. Obtaining the #2 seed was crucial, as it gives New Mexico a first-round bye in the tournament and allows them to bypass back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday, Nov 12 and 13. The MPSF Tournament will be held Nov. 12-15 in Denver, Colo.
“It’s nice,” said Fishbein in reference to the #2 MPSF seed. “We’re in a good situation right now going into the tournament, but every team out there is good and [UNLV] made it difficult for us tonight. Our guys know that maybe we haven’t gotten all the results we should have. Hopefully we can relax and go into this conference tournament excited and refreshed. We’re where we want to be right now, we’re in control of our own destiny.”
New Mexico awaits conference pairings, which will be announced on Sunday after all regular-season conference games have been played. Please visit GoLobos.com for MPSF Tournament pairings, game times, and additional information.
