The 25th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is tied for 11th place after the first round of the Landfall Tradition being played in Wilmington, N.C. Live stats are available at GolfStat.com.
The Lobos and Pepperdine each shot 15-over 303 on the par-72, 6,325-yard Country Club of Landfall course, which is the site of the 2010 NCAA Championships. This week’s tournament features 16 teams ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfweek poll.
UNM is ahead of four teams – Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest – that are ranked higher in the latest poll.
Southern California has a 5-stoke lead over UCLA in the 18-team field. The Women of Troy shot an even-par 288.
UNM sophomore Rebecca Hellbom shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 5th place. She had four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey. Hellbom trails Alabama’s Camilla Lennarth and Arizona State’s Carlota Ciganda by three shots.
Senior Jodi Ewart never really recovered from four bogeys on the front nine. She was 1-under on the back and finished with a 75, tying for 36th. Fellow senior Britney Choy is tied for 58th at 78. She was 2-over after 14 holes, but played the last four in 4-over, including a double bogey on the 18th hole.
Sophomore Sarah Salvo shot 79 with freshman Bethany Buchner coming in with an 89.
Second-round action begins Saturday morning. The Lobos tee off between 8:09 and 8:45 a.m. Mountain Time.
