The University of New Mexico will open its swimming and diving season in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday. Competition against conference opponents Colorado State, San Diego State and Air Force will begin at 1 p.m.
Led by four-year head coach Tracy Ljone, the Lobo swimming and diving team is looking for improvements both as a team and as individuals. UNM will be relying on leadership from five seniors, including Sasha Evangulova, Ashley Grisdale, Alex Lusk, Bridget O’Hara and Jennifer Patterson to lead the underclassmen on the pool deck.
Last year the Lobos defeated Air Force 207-93 but, fell to both Colorado State and San Diego State on the same day, 197-103 and 170-130 respectively, in San Diego Calif.
The Lobos finished 2008-09 season strong in the pool as Alex Lusk captured ninth-place at NCAA Diving Zones. Marissa Campbell smashed school records in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. She also concluded the season second all-time in the 50-yard freestyle. UNM was also successful in the classroom as 20 swimmers and divers were named to the Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The team finished the spring semester with a cumulative G.P.A of 3.43.
