LAS VEGAS, Nev.— University of New Mexico sophomore Carl Ho, who has posted a 9-4 fall singles record, narrowly lost to New Mexico State’s Gustave Diep, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, in the round of 16 main draw singles at the ITA Mountain Regional Thursday. Ho pushed each set to a tiebreaker before coming away with the loss. Meanwhile, Ho and Phil Anderson and Conor Berg and Joe Wood advanced to the round of 16 in doubles action.
Both pairs will compete for a spot in the event’s quarterfinals on Friday with Ho and Anderson taking on the one-seeded Andrew Landwerlen and David Simson from Denver while Berg and Wood meet up with fourth-seeded Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding from Utah.
Ho and Anderson notched an 8-5 win over Austin Frances and Stephen Katrein of Air Force. Berg and Wood topped Nevada’s Wessim Derbel and Laurent Garcin, 9-7.
Ho was one of three Lobos to advance to the round of 32 and the only Lobo to proceed to the round of 16 after defeating Idaho’s Adrein Simon 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. Diep topped two Lobos on the day, eliminating Phillips with a three-set win in the round of 32 before just getting past Ho. Dunbar took a 6-2, 6-3 loss to BYU’s Thomas Shubert.
Ho, Phillips, Dunbar join Anderson and Wood in the still-competitive consolation matches. Berg, who picked up a two-set victory over Air Force’s Brett Rodgers in the consolation second round, held his own over the No. 1 seed and 89th-ranked Simson from Utah in the third round qualifier, falling in the end, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The doubles round of 16 kicks off Friday’s action, beginning at 9 a.m. MT with the event running through Sunday, Oct. 25.
