The 25th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team joins the top squads in the nation this weekend, traveling to Wilmington, N.C., for the eighth Landfall Tradition. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall. Another 18 holes will be played Saturday with the final round on Sunday. This course is the site of the 2010 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is the host. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.

LANDFALL COMPETITORS – The 18-team field includes the top-six teams in the nation in the most recent Golfweek poll, and 17 of the top 31 teams in the national rankings will be on hand. The Lobos join host UNC Wilmington and No. 1 Southern Cal, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 4 Purdue, No. 5 Michigan State, No. 6 Auburn, No. 8 LSU, No. 9 Pepperdine, No. 11 Alabama, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 13 Georgia, No. 16 Duke, No. 18 Denver, No. 21 Virginia, No. 23 Wake Forest and No. 31 North Carolina.

MORE ON THE LANDFALL TRADITION – The Landfall Tradition features the strongest field in its eight years of existence. Two-time defending champion Wake Forest returns to defend its crown. Wake Forest, host UNC Wilmington and UNC Chapel Hill are the only schools returning from last year’s tournament. Eight teams – Auburn, Denver, Duke, Georgia, LSU, Pepperdine, Southern Cal and UCLA – are making their debut in the Landfall.

UNM HISTORY AT THE LANDFALL IS GOOD – New Mexico is making its fifth appearance in the Landfall Tradition, and it has had a fair amount of success. The Lobos won the team titles in 2003 and 2004, and finished sixth in 2005 and third in 2006.

LOBO LINEUP – Head coach Jill Trujillo will send the following players: 1) Jodi Ewart, 2) Rebecca Hellbom, 3) Britney Choy, 4) Bethany Buchner and 5) Sarah Salvo.

WINDY CITY CLASSIC REVIEW – It wasn’t the Lobos’ day in the final round of the Windy City Collegiate Classic. No. 17 UNM shot a 24-over 312 on the par-72, 6,538-yard Glen Club golf course to finish in a sixth place tie with Michigan.

New Mexico began the final round 19 shots behind Purdue and in third place. The Boilermakers widened that gap to 35 strokes while defending their title in the 15-team field with a 54-hole total of 860.

Lobo senior Jodi Ewart had another top-10 finish, shooting a 1-over 217 (72-71-74) and placing in a three-way tie for sixth. Purdue’s Maude-Aimee LeBlanc claimed the individual title at 5-under 211. UNM senior Britney Choy tied for 35th at 11-over 227 (72-74-81) while sophomore Sarah Salvo came in at 228 (74-74-80), tying for 42nd. Sophomore Rebecca Hellbom tied for 47th at 230 (75-71-84) followed by freshman Bethany Buchner at 231 (77-77-77), tying for 54th.

BLAZING START FOR EWART – Senior Jodi Ewart was named the Mountain West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for September. It’s the fourth such honor for Ewart in her collegiate career.

Ewart finished second in two tournaments during the month. She shot a school-record 11-under-par 208 (69-71-68) at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 19-20. The 11-under par broke the 23-year-old school record of 10-under set by Caroline Keggi in 1986. Ewart’s 208 total is also a Lobo record for 54 holes, breaking Ryley Webb’s 209 at the 2001 MWC Championships.

The three-time MWC Player of the Year also finished second at the Ptarmigan Fall Ram Classic, carding a 7-under 209 (72-69-68). Ewart currently ranks first in the MWC for stroke average (70.44) and is ranked No. 11 nationally by Golfweek with a rating of 70.70.

HEAD COACH Jill Trujillo – A 1990 UNM graduate and women’s golf letterwinner from 1987-90, Jill Trujillo is in her third season in charge of the women’s golf program. Trujillo has led New Mexico to four team titles, including consecutive Mountain West Conference championships in 2008 and `09. She was named the 2007-08 MWC Coach of the Year. Trujillo was interim head coach when UNM advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2007 at Daytona Beach. The Lobos finished 22nd at the Championships in 2007 and 19th in 2009.
