UNM HEADS TO CHICAGOLAND – The 17th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is back on the course next week when it travels to the Chicago area for the Windy City Collegiate Classic. Northwestern University is the host school for the tournament that will be played Monday (Oct. 5) and Tuesday (Oct. 6) at The Glen Club in Glenview, Ill. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
WINDY CITY COMPETITORS – The 15-team field includes five teams ranked in Golfweek’s Sept. 29 poll: No. 14 Purdue, No. 16 Arizona, No. 17 UNM, No. 28 TCU and No. 30 Tulane. Also participating are East Carolina, Illinois, Iowa State, Michigan, UNLV, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tulane, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington.
LOBO LINEUP – Head coach Jill Trujillo will send the following: 1) Jodi Ewart, 2) Rebecca Hellbom, 3) Britney Choy, 4) Bethany Buchner and 5) Sarah Salvo.
LAST YEAR’S WINDY CITY CLASSIC – Purdue took the team title with a 54-hole score of 27-over 891. The Boilermakers’ Junthima Gulyanamitta won the individual competition by six shots at 212 (4-under). UNM did not play there last year.
2009 BRANCH LAW FIRM / DICK McGUIRE REVIEW – The University of New Mexico’s bid to make it two in a row at the 30th Branch Law Firm / Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course came up just short, individually and as a team.
UNM senior Jodi Ewart made a furious charge in the final round with birdies on six of the final 10 holes, but fell one shot shy of defending her individual title. That honor went to Oregon junior Kendra Little, who set a McGuire record with a 12-under 207. Ewart finished at 11-under 208 (69-71-68).
Ewart’s 11-under par and 208 total are New Mexico records for 54 holes. It was a special time for Ewart as well. Her parents – Harvey and Zoe – showed up unannounced on their daughter’s Albuquerque doorstep a few days before the tournament began. They made the flight from Manchester, England, to watch their only child for the first time in a collegiate tournament.
As a team, the Lobos just couldn’t sustain the wave that is Pepperdine. The Waves won the McGuire for the second time – also in 2005 – in record-setting fashion. The 12th-ranked Waves posted an 859 total (17-under), besting the previous tournament standard by 12 strokes. UNM shot 871 in 2003.
No. 21 New Mexico logged a 6-under 286 for the second consecutive round, finishing seven strokes behind Pepperdine at 866 (10-under). The 866 total ranks No. 4 all-time by a Lobo team for 54 holes.
New Mexico sophomore Rebecca Hellbom started the final round in 17th place but roared all the way to a fifth-place tie after posting a 4-under 69. She ended the tournament at 4-under 215 (76-70-69). Senior Britney Choy also recorded a top-10 finish, shooting even-par 73 today to finish at 2-under 217 (74-70-73).
Freshman Bethany Buchner tied for 33rd at 226 (75-75-76). Sophomore Sarah Salvo finished at 236 (77-79-80). A pair of Lobos played as individuals. Sophomore Erin Miller shot 236 (78-79-79) while junior Jordan Kennon was at 245 (83-84-78).
BLAZING START FOR EWART – Senior Jodi Ewart was named the Mountain West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for September. It’s the fourth such honor for Ewart in her collegiate career.
Ewart finished second in two tournaments during the month of September. She set a school-record 11-under-par 208 (69-71-68) at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 19-20. The 11-under par broke the 23-year-old school record of 10-under set by Caroline Keggi in 1986. Ewart’s 208 total is also a Lobo record for 54 holes, breaking Ryley Webb’s 209 at the 2001 MWC Championships.
The three-time MWC Player of the Year also finished second at the Ptarmigan Fall Ram Classic, carding a 7-under 209 (72-69-68). Ewart currently ranks first in the MWC for stroke average (69.50) and is ranked No. 8 nationally by Golfweek with a rating of 69.38.
