STANFORD, Calif.–It was a tough afternoon for the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team in Stanford, Calif. The Lobos dropped a 2-0 decision to Stanford in the last game of the Stanford Nike Classic today after notching a 2-1 win over No. 4 California on Friday night. While the shots were relatively even on both sides, the Lobos put the pressure on Stanford keeper John Moore with a handful of quality chances. The New Mexico offense made a concerted push with less than two minutes left in the game, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Lobos are now 5-3-0 on the season, while Stanford improves to 6-1-0.
“We came out strong, created opportunities, and defended well,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “They went up 1-0 and then just dropped back and defended for the rest of the game. We probably had five really quality chances and we didn’t finish. There really are no excuses, but this is what happens when you give a team an early goal and don’t finish your chances. It’s a missed opportunity but we have to move forward, recover from this game, and prepare for the next one.”
Stanford’s Taylor Amman took a cross from Evan Morgan in the 11th minute for a header that and put the Cardinal up 1-0. Amman’s strike held up until 88:37 when Daniel Leon scored on a counter attack, utilizing one-touch passing from teammates Amman and Cameron Lamming to set the final score at 2-0.
Lobo forward Justin Davis led the team with three shots, while P.J. Wilson and Michael Green chipped in with two apiece.
New Mexico will take on No. 24 Cal-State Northridge in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday, Oct. 3 following a women’s game against conference foe TCU at 5 p.m. Both games will be sponsored by UNM Hospitals as part of Lobo soccer’s “Think Pink” night. Both teams will wear pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society. Please visit GoLobos.com for more information.
