SAINT LOUIS, Mo. — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team turned in a commanding performance Tuesday night, shutting out No. 21 Saint Louis 3-0 on the road. Seniors Simon Ejdemyr, Justin Davis, and P.J. Wilson notched a goal apiece for the Lobos, setting the tone for the 2009 season with a huge win in the season opener. UNM outshot SLU 15-9, padding their 1-0 halftime lead with two convincing second-half strikes.
“[Saint Louis] is a good team, a very tradition-rich team,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein following Tuesday night’s win. “We’re really proud of our boys. Anytime you go up against a Top-25 team, beat them by three goals, and shut them out at their place, it’s a pretty great way to start the season.”
Senior defender Ejdemyr put the Lobos on the board first, firing the ball past Billiken keeper Ross Kaufmann on a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Ejdemyr’s game-winner, the lone score in the first 45, proved to be all the firepower the Lobo offense would need for the win.
Lobo forward Davis came on strong five minutes into the second half, taking the ball from sophomore Michael Green and dribbling into the box unmarked for a goal 10 yards out.
The Lobos’ exemplary offensive display was capped off by a gritty play from James Urbany. The junior midfielder ran a ball down to the right endline in the 61st minute, delivering a picture-perfect centering feed to streaking forward P.J. Wilson for the final goal.
The New Mexico backline put together an aggressive, physical performance that kept the SLU offense off stride for the majority of the night. Keeper Justin Fite played the full 90 minutes in goal, notching four impressive saves.
With the addition of tonight’s goal, Ejdemyr is currently 5-5 on career penalty kicks. Ejdemyr also scored the Lobos’ last goal of the 2008 season on a penalty kick, the lone strike in New Mexico’s 1-0 win over No. 25 Denver at home on Nov. 16. The Lobos’ home-field win over Denver was also the last time the Lobos beat a ranked team.
The Lobos take on San Francisco at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday, Sept. 5 in their home opener. For more information, please visit GoLobos.com.
