ALBUQUERQUE, N.M — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team overcame a 64-minute lightning delay at the UNM Soccer complex tonight to drop the visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves 4-0 in exhibition play. Senior forward Justin Davis ignited the Lobo offense with two goals, and UNM outshot CSUP 23-6 while scoring three second-half goals. The Lobos wrapped up exhibition play 3-0.

“I was really happy with how we reacted to that first break,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We had three great chances in the first ten minutes, and the reality is that anybody can give you a match on any given day.”

Weather definitely had an impact on tonight’s matchup, even after the two teams regrouped on the playing field following the delay. Conditions remained very slick and substitutes spent considerable time staying limber on the sidelines.

Two minutes after returning to the field, Davis took the ball from senior P.J. Wilson in the 29th minute and fired a ball from the far right wing for the first score of the game. He struck again three minutes into the second half from 35 feet out. Junior Dominique Romero gave UNM a 3-0 lead after scoring an unnassisted 30-foot chip shot in the 76th minute, his second goal in exhibition play. Freshman Lawrence Robledo scored the final goal for the Lobos after beating a CSUP defender one-on-one with three minutes left in the match.

Much can be said for the Lobos’ attack-minded approach in tonight’s outing. In addition to outshooting the Thunderwolves by 17, New Mexico posted a whopping 12 corner kicks to CSUP’s one. The Lobos kept the ball in the offensive half of the field for the majority of the night and continually pressured the ball, even while dropping back on defense.

“It was an exciting game,” said Fishbein. “We’ve got a lot of really talented attacking players and we’re going to have some tough decisions ahead of us. But it was great to score four goals at home, and it’s just a matter of just building on this going into the opener.”

New Mexico opens regular season play on the road against Saint Louis at 6 p.m. MT Tuesday, Sept. 1. The Lobos take on San Francisco at 7 p.m MT on Saturday Sept. 5 in their home opener.
