This Week: The Lobos host the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic on Aug. 28-29. Guests will be the University of Delaware, Portland State University and UC Santa Barbara. The Lobos have faced all three teams in the past, tying Delaware 1-1 and UC Santa Barbara 2-2, while Portland State leads the series, 2-1.

The Debut of Big Louie … The volleyball team’s new mascot, Big Louie, will make his debut on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara.
Lobos Among Tops In Attendance … New Mexico finished the 2008 season ranked 20th in the national attendance rankings. UNM averaged 1,570 fans over the 13 home matches of the 2008 season. The Lobos’ season-high 2,381 fans showed up on Nov. 28 against New Mexico State. The Lobos are second in the MWC behind Colorado State in 11th with 2,387 fans per match.
Michaelsen Named MWC Preseason Co-Player of the Year … University of New Mexico setter Jade Michaelsen has been named the 2009 Mountain West Conference Preseason Co-Volleyball Player of the Year, along with Colorado State’s Tessa Nelson. The Lobos were picked third in the MWC Preseason Poll with 112 points and three first-place votes, the highest MWC preseason ranking ever for New Mexico.
About New Mexico (0-0, 0-0 MWC) … The Lobos were picked third in the 2009 Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll, the same place they finished the 2008 season. The big difference this season is UNM earned three first-place votes from the voting panel of coaches and media … Junior setter Jade Michaelsen was named MWC Co-Preseason Player of the Year by the same voting group … Michaelsen and senior Rose Morris are the team captains for 2009.
About Delaware (0-0, 0-0 Colonial Athletics Association) … The Blue Hens are a 2008 NCAA Tournament team, representing the CAA. Delaware was 19-16 overall and 9-5 in conference play for third place and won the conference tournament title for the second straight season. Coached by Bonnie Kenny, UD has been picked first in the 2009 CAA Preseason Poll. The Blue Hens returns five starters from last season’s team, including all-conference performers Steph Barry, Katie Dennehy and Kim Stewart.
About Portland State (0-0, 0-0 Big Sky Conference) … The Vikings are a 2008 NCAA Tournament team, their first-ever apperance in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Portland State was 20-9 overall and 11-5 in Big Sky play for second place and won the Big Sky tournament title. Third-year head coach Michael Seeman’s Vikings return six starters led by all-Big Sky performers Nique Fradella and Marija Vojnovic. Portland State was picked to win the Big Sky Conference
About UC Santa Barbara (0-0, 0-0 Big West Conference) … The Gauchos are led by volleyball legend Kathy Gregory. Gregory is in her 35th season as the head coach at UCSB with a 809-362 record. UCSB finished the 2008 season with an 11-16 overall mark and 7-9 in Big West action. The Gauchos have been picked fifth in the Big West Preseason Poll. Top returners for UCSB are Rebecca Saraceno, Dana Vargas and Lily Lopez.
Setting Records … Junior setter Jade Michaelsen is expected to crack the Top 10 on the UNM career assists list this weekend during the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. Michaelsen, from Tucson, Ariz., is currently 60 assists away from taking over 10th place held by former Lobo All-American Pauline Manser.

Blocking Into The Books … Senior Anna Lehne should also move onto the UNM career Top 10 lists for blocking – total blocks, block solos and block assists – over the weekend. Lehne, a senior from Pueblo, Colo., had a Top 10 season mark with 101 block assists in 2008.
