Lobos Defeat No. 12 Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team notched their second win in exhibition action today, shutting out the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 2-0 in Tulsa, Okla. Speedy senior P.J. Wilson led the attack up front, striking twice for the Lobos.

“It was a good outing,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “A lot of guys got to play, we came away with a shutout, and we scored a couple nice goals. But you can’t lose your edge and you can’t be too confident. We’ve gotta stay hungry.”

Wilson took an assist from sophomore Michael Green in the 17th minute to put the Lobos on the board, and the score remained 1-0 through halftime. Wilson busted out of the gate in the second half for another goal, putting the ball past Golden Eagle keeper Irving Peralta for the second time at 45:49. Lobo senior Stephen Brown had the assist.

New Mexico outshot Oral Roberts 9-7 overall, posting six shots on goal to ORU’s three. Lobo goalkeepers Justin Fite and Victor Rodriguez teamed up for a combined shutout, logging 60 and 30 minutes between the pipes, respectively.

Ten Lobos came off the bench to see time, highlighted by freshman Levi Rossi at forward and Rodriguez in goal. Rossi took two shots on goal, while Rodriguez made two saves to preserve the shutout.

New Mexico will play Southern Colorado on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. MT at the UNM Soccer Complex for the team’s last exhibition match.

UNM will open the regular season on the road at Saint Louis at 6 p.m MT Tuesday, Sept. 1, and take on San Francisco at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday, Sept. 5 in their home opener. For more information, please visit GoLobos.com.
