Pearl Diehm, wife of the late “Tow” Diehm, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, in Albuquerque at the age of 83. Tow served the University of New Mexico athletics department from 1957 until his death in 1998, serving as the school’s head trainer for 31 years and later as an associate athletics director.
“The University of New Mexico Department of Athletics extends its heartfelt condolences to the entire Diehm family for their loss,” said Vice-President for Athletics Paul Krebs. “Pearl was a wonderful lady who cheered on the Lobos for more than 50 years. She was a tremendous ambassador for UNM and left a lasting impression on hundreds of coaches and student-athletes.”
Tow left quite a legacy at UNM as well. Located in the south end of University Stadium, UNM’s primary athletics training facility and football administrative offices are named in his honor, the “L.F. “Tow” Diehm Athletics Facility.
Additionally, since 1998 UNM Athletics has presented the Tow Diehm Inspirational award to a male student-athlete based on leadership, character and commitment to team.
A memorial service for Pearl was held Tuesday in Albuquerque at the Monte Vista Christian Church. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 14, at 10 a.m., at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St., in Topeka, Kansas.
