Tijeras, NM – University of New Mexico men’s golfer Nick Geyer completed a wire-to-wire victory at the 33rd annual New Mexico – West Texas Amateur Championship Sunday at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club, carding a 5-under-par 67-70-74=211. Geyer never conceded a lead of less than three shots after the first round. He was the only player in the field to finish the event under-par. With this victory Nick will be exempt for the next two Challenge Cup teams, earn an invite to the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, the Sunnehanna Amateur Championship, and two other top ten amateur championships.

“It was a great tournament for me with a great field,” said Geyer. “I played with two past champions (2007 champion Brandon Putnam and ’08 champion Tim Madigan) and it’s a real honor to put my name in the company of those great players and the other great players that have won this tournament before.”

Putnam and Geyer are both heading into their senior seasons for the Lobos. Putnam finished tied for fourth with incoming freshman Lobo golfer John Catlin after posting a 3-over 68-75-76=219. Catlin, shot a 69-77-73=219. Lobo golfers Alex Zannes and James Gehrke also competed, both tying for 36th place at 22-over. Zannes carded a 73-88-77=238 while Gehrke finished with an 80-75-83=238. Former Lobo Guillermo Chavez also made the cut, finishing in 49th place after carding a 30-over 84-80-82-246.

Next up for Geyer is the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, held July 28-31 at the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
