University of New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley officially unveiled the Lobos’ new Nike football uniforms today. It’s the first uniform redesign for the program since 2005. New Mexico is in the second year of a six-year contract with Nike that makes the global giant the exclusive supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories to virtually every Lobo team through the 2013-14 academic year.

“This is a new era of New Mexico football, but these uniforms were designed with tradition in mind,” said Locksley. “We wanted to go back to a more traditional look with the striping and clean look.”

UNM equipment operations manager Jacque May worked closely with Nike representatives during the design process, which began in late 2008. The new Lobo uniforms feature the latest Nike fabric and materials, giving players a lighter and more breatheable gameday jersey.

Both the cherry home and white away jerseys proudly feature the word “New Mexico” across the chest above the numbers. All text and numbering is in the official UNM Athletic Department “Lobo” font.

The new clean design allows the coaching staff to be able to utilize more combinations of jersey and pant colors. However, New Mexico’s base gameday look will be cherry jerseys on silver pants at home and white jerseys on cherry pants on the road.

The Lobo head logo, silver helmet design will remain the same as it has since 2002.

“For me, this always comes back to recruiting,” said Locksley. “Having been fortunate enough to recruit some pretty good players during my career, I know that uniforms and equipment do make a difference, and this great looking new design definitely helps us.

“It’s a real advantage for us to be able to go into homes as an exclusive Nike sponsored school, show off how good our players look in these uniforms and tell kids how our players benefit from this outstanding, long-term equipment deal with Nike.”
