NEW ORLEANS – Eleven members of the University of New Mexico track and field team – six men, five women – were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team the organization announced this morning. Honorees had to post a 3.25 GPA or above and attained an NCAA regional or national (provisional/automatic) qualifying mark during the 2009 indoor/outdoor seasons.
Eligible athletes also had to have completed at least two semesters at their current school.
The New Mexico contingent included five NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifiers, led by 10,000-meter All-American Michelle Corrigan. Nicky Archer (10,000m), Ashley Gibson (1,500m), Mat Ashton (10,000m) and Rory Fraser (5,000m) were the other national qualifiers honored.
Ariel Burr (400m), Whitney Johnson (pole vault), David Bishop (1,500m), Ross Millington (1,500m), Thomas Trujillo (4x100m relay) and Alex Willis (3,000m steeplechase) were recognized after qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships in their respective events.
