ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson recently released the 2009 Lobo volleyball schedule. The schedule features seven teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including Mountain West Conference foes Colorado State and Utah. Two of the five non-conference opponents, Delaware and Portland State, will come to Albuquerque in August for the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. The Lobos will face American in the Nike Portland Invitational and Tulane in the Arizona Invitational in September. The annual Rio Grande Rivalry match-up with New Mexico State is set for Oct. 13 in Las Cruces.

The Lobos will get things started in August with the start of fall practice during the first week of the month and the Cherry-Silver scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22. The 2009 season officially gets underway on Aug. 28-29 with the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic that will bring Delaware, Portland State, and UC Santa Barbara to Johnson Center.

After spending last September on the road, UNM will spend a bit more time in Albuquerque in 2009. The month will begin at the Nike Portland Invitational, Sept. 4-5, in Oregon against American and Portland. The Lobos return home for the Comcast Challenge, Sept. 11-12, against Cal State Fullerton, Baylor and Pittsburgh.

Mountain West Conference competition will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when TCU comes to Johnson Center for a 7 p.m. start. The Lobos will spend the weekend at the Arizona Invitational in Tucson, Sept. 19-20, against UTEP, host Arizona and Tulane.

Conference play rounds out the month with a road trip to Colorado State and Wyoming, Sept. 24 and 26.

The Lobos will begin and end the month of October against San Diego State and Air Force. SDSU and AFA will come to Albuquerque to start the month, Oct. 1 and 3, and host the Lobos, Oct. 29 and 31. In between, UNM will go on the road against BYU (Oct. 8), Utah (Oct. 10) and New Mexico State (Oct. 13). The Lobos will host UNLV (Oct. 17) and bring in Wyoming and Colorado State for Homecoming weekend, Oct. 22 and 24.

November will be a light month with four matches during the first three weeks of the season. Utah and BYU come to Albuquerque, Nov. 5 and 7. The Lobos wrap up MWC action on the road at UNLV (Nov. 12) and TCU (Nov. 20). The final week of the regular season will be spent in the Crescent City at the University of New Orleans Tournament, Nov. 27-28.

The 2009 Lobos will be led by all-MWC setter Jade Michaelsen and seniors Anna Lehne, Rose Morris and Allie Suiter. UNM was 22-7 and 11-5 in MWC play in 2008.
