He began his career as a virtual unknown walk-on, but University of New Mexico senior Clint McPeek is beginning to get some notoriety. McPeek can now be found in newsstands and supermarkets around the region as he appears on the cover the 2009 Sporting News College Football Yearbook for region 15.
The Albuquerque La Cueva product will move to outside linebacker this year in the Lobos’ new 4-3 defensive scheme after playing the hybrid safety/linebacker “lobo” position in the old 3-3-5 system.
The 6-1, 227-pound McPeek led New Mexico with 103 tackles last year, including 4.5 for loss. He also had nine pass break-ups, and interception, and a forced fumble despite playing most of the season with torn cartilage in his knee that required a pair of offseason surgeries.
He did not participate in spring practice, but is getting closer to full strength and is expected to be one of the Mountain West Conference’s most productive linebackers this fall.
