Albuquerque, N.M.- The University of New Mexico sports medicine staff was recently recognized as the finest in the Mountain West Conference when it was awarded the George F. Curtis ATC Award. The award is given to the sports medicine staff of the year in the Mountain West Conference as voted on by their MWC peers.
“It is an honor for our staff,” head athletic trainer Dave Binder said. “The award represents our entire staff not for any specific individual.”
The New Mexico sports medicine staff is divided up into 38 student trainers, nine graduate assistants, four assistant athletic trainers and one head trainer.
New Mexico is the second school to be bestowed with ATC Award. The award was first given out last year to BYU, where George F. Curtis was formally the head athletic trainer before stepping down that same year.
The UNM sports medicine staff prides itself on having some of the finest trainers in the country, Bob Waller, who was an assistant trainer at New Mexico for 10 years, was recently named the head athletic trainer at Wyoming.
“It’s quite an honor that our staff members are being sought after,” Binder said. “It shows that the level of professionalism and quality of care that our staff provides to our student-athletes is second-to-none.”
