Three University of New Mexico student-athletes have been named to the 2008-09 CoSIDA Academic all-district at-large teams. Skier Tor-Hakon Hellebostad and men’s golfer Jon Sauer earned first team accolades while golfer Jodi Ewart was named to the women’s second team.
Hellebostad and Sauer are now eligible for academic All-America recognition, which will be announced next month.
Hellebostad is a junior from Nesoddtangen, Norway. He has a 3.98 cumulative grade-point-average, majoring in University Studies. Hellebostad was named a Scholar-Athlete by the National Ski Coaches Association in 2008 and 2009. He is also a two-time NCAA All-American on the slopes in the 10K men’s classical race.
Sauer, a senior from St. Cloud, Minn., has a 4.02 GPA majoring in Management. His is one of three current Lobo student-athletes in all sports to carry a 4.0 GPA or higher. Sauer was recently named the 2008-09 Lobo Club Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to the UNM All-Academic Team. On the course, Sauer had a 73.53 stroke average over 38 rounds with five top-20 finishes.
Ewart, a junior from North Yorkshire, England, has a 3.44 GPA majoring in Psychology. She has a season stroke average of 72.25 with two individual titles and seven top-7 finishes in eight tournaments. Ewart is a three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and the Lobos’ career leader with a stroke average of 73.40.
