The 37th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team was selected to participate in the NCAA West Regional tournament at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. The 54-hole event will be hosted by the University of San Francisco and held May 14-16.

New Mexico is seeded seventh in the region, with the top seed going to Southern California. Fellow Mountain West Conference member San Diego State is seeded fourth in the regional. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals from each regional. The NCAA Championship tournament takes place May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Head coach Glen Millican will travel seniors Steve Saunders and Jon Sauer, junior Nick Geyer, sophomore Tom Carlson and freshman James Erkenbeck to the regional. Saunders is UNM’s top golfer with a scoring average of 72.37. He won the individual championship at the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament, was selected to the All-Mountain West Conference team and named the Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Year.

New Mexico at Regional Play

The Lobos have qualified for the regional round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship every year but once (2008) since the NCAA introduced the format in 1989. New Mexico has won a regional tournament once, tying Washington at the 2002 West Regional title at the UNM Championship Golf Course.

The Lobos have had two individual wins at regionals as well. Michael Letzig shot a 69-68-71=208 to win the 2003 West Regional played at Auburn, Washington. Mike Sauer shot a 68-69-71=208 to win the 1995 NCAA West Regional played at the UNM Championship Golf Course.WEST REGIONALDate: May 14-16
