The Lobos men’s golf team carded an even-par 284 today and sits in third place after the first round of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men’s Golf Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. Steve Saunders shot a 2-under 69 to lead the Lobos. Saunders is tied for fourth place entering the second day of competition.
James Erkenbeck posted an even-par 71 and is tied in 10th place, while Nick Geyer and Tom Carlson each shot a 1-over 72 and sit tied for 12th. Jon Sauer’s 2-over 73 has him tied for 22nd entering the second round.
“Our guys played a really solid round of golf today,” said New Mexico head coach Glen Millican. “As you can see in our scores… all five guys played well all day and all five had a good chance to post a great number. We were able to count four good scores and even throw out a good one.”
“I didn’t really feel like I was hitting it real good, but I did a pretty good job of making a good round out of it today,” said Saunders. “I ended up getting it done somehow.”
Texas Christian is the current leader after an 8-under 276, followed by San Diego State at 1-under (283). The Horned Frogs’ Tom Hodge leads the individual competition, shooting a 4-under 67, followed by San Diego State’s Bryan Martin and UNLV’s Ji Moon – both having carded a 3-under 68.
Play resumes Friday at 8:00 a.m. MT, with the Lobos teeing off starting with Jon Sauer at 9:40.
