Albuquerque, N.M.-The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team put up a fight today as they fell to No. 42 UNLV. The fifth seeded Lobos lost 4-1 to the No. 1 seed UNLV Friday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships. New Mexico ends the season 10-14.

After losing the doubles point hopes were still high for singles play. Mackenzie White came out swinging as she downed Nikol Dimitrova, 6-1, 6-2. White gave up a two games early in the second set but finished out strong not letting Dimitrova win another game after it was tied at two all.

Emma Hayman went out fighting. In the first set Hayman found herself down one game most of the match. Hayman tied the set at five all but fell 5-7 to Katy Williams. Hayman was losing the second set, 5-2 when the match was called.

Anya Villanueva-Forte had a match similar to Hayman’s. After starting down 5-1 to Anna Maskaljun Villanueva-Forte battled her way back to make the match 5-6 but fell at 5-7. In the second set Villanueva-Forte was down 5-3 when the match was called.

The MWC Championship match between TCU and UNLV will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center.
