PROVO, Utah — Seniors John Hesketh and Clinton Cox combined for a 12-2 University of New Mexico baseball win against BYU at Larry Miller Field in Provo, Utah on Thursday night. From the plate, more seniors made a difference as Mike Brownstein, Dane Hamilton, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Kevin Atkinson combined for six runs, eight hits and eight RBI. New Mexico improves to 31-11 overall and 11-5 in Mountain West Conference action.
BYU (23-16, 10-6 MWC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, before New Mexico built up to an 8-1 lead over the next four innings.
The Lobos scored two runs in the fourth, 2-1, when Brownstein scored on one of the Cougars six errors and Ryan Honeycutt scored on a Cavazos-Galvez bunt single.
The lead grew to 4-1 in the fifth on a Honeycutt double to left field that scored Daniel Gonzalez and Brownstein. Gonzalez doubled in Adam Courcha in the sixth to build up to 5-1.
Three runs in the seventh got the Lobo lead up to 8-1 when Max Willett scored on a groundout and Cavazos-Galvez drove in Rafael Neda. Cavazos-Galvez scored the eighth Lobo run of the game on a single by Atkinson.
BYU got one more run on the board in the seventh, 8-2. The Lobos capped off the game in the ninth with four runs, including a three-run home run to left center by Atkinson that scored Hamilton and Cavazos-Galvez.
Hesketh (5-2) pitched into the seventh inning to earn his team-leading fifth win of the season. Cox relieved Hesketh in the seventh to earn his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Atkinson, Cavazos-Galvez, Brownstein, Hamilton and Neda had two hits each to lead the Lobos, while Atkinson and Cavazos-Galvez contributed four and three RBI, respectively.
