Golf World has named University of New Mexico junior Nick Geyer its male member of its “College Players of the Week” for the period between March 23 and March 29. Golf World’s “College Players of the Week” section highlights a male and a female who have demonstrated outstanding individual play during a seven-day period.

Nick Geyer opened the National Invitational Tournament with a six-under 66 en route to a nine-under 207 win at Omni Tucson National Golf Club. His performance propelled the Lobos to a seven-shot victory over Arizona and seven other schools ranked higher than UNM entering the event. The win was the first for the Lobos since the 2006 William H. Tucker 2 ½ years ago. This was Geyer’s first collegiate win and the first time he shot all three rounds under par (66-71-70 at the par-72 course) this season.

Geyer’s performance at the National Invitational Tournament capped off a March in which he averaged a 73.00 per round for the month. His performance at the National Invitational Tournament helped push UNM to first place at 14-under, seven stroke better than the host Wildcats and the rest of the field. The win pushed the Lobos from No. 46 to No. 34 in the Golfweek magazine men’s college golf team rankings.

The 66 Geyer posted in the first round at the National Invitational Tournament ties for the best round of his college career. He posted two 66-shot rounds at the Pioneer Classic as a freshman during the 2005-06 season to finish second. It was his highest career finish before capturing the 2009 National Invitational Tournament title.
