The University of New Mexico men’s golf team rallied from 17th to ninth place Tuesday to close the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Lobos posted a third-round score of 297, second best only to tournament champions Oklahoma State (294). UNM finished with a total score of 912 after 54 holes, translating to a 60-over-par for the windswept tournament.

James Erkenbeck and Steve Saunders finished tied for ninth place. The Lobos’ duo shot a three-round total of 9-over 222. Erkenbeck posted a 3-over 75 in the third round, while Saunders shot an even-par 72. Saunders now has four consecutive top-10 finishes for the Lobos, while Erkenbeck notched his second top-10 finish of the season.

Nick Geyer followed up his win at the National Invitational Tournament with a three-round total of 231, landing him 18-over and tying him for 42nd place. Jon Sauer posted a 27-over 240 and tied for 80th, while Tom Carlson shot a 31-over 244 to tie for 84th.

Oklahoma State captured the team title after shooting an 11-over 863, while the Cowboys’ Morgan Hoffmann and Southern California’s Tom Glissmeyer tied for first place. Each shot a 1-under 212 at the par-71 course.
