San Diego, Calif.- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team won its second straight match Friday for the first time this season. The Lobos downed Northern Arizona, 5-2 at the Barnes Collegiate Invitational in San Diego, Calif. New Mexico improved to 5-9.
For the first time this season, the Lobos swept the doubles point. Ola Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman notched a win today defeating Edit Suhajda and Orsi Golovics, 8-7 with a 9-7 tiebreaker.
Anya Villanueva-Forte and Ashley Bonner won their first doubles match together in spring play defeating Leslie Vial and Kim Van Ginkel, 8-4.
Mackenzie White and Victoria Tessmar captured a win at the No. 3 doubles spot defeating Stacey Pinchbeck and Yumi Hasegawa, 8-3.
Clinching the victory for the Lobos was Bonner who stepped into the No.5 singles spot. Bonner defeated Vial in a close match winning 7-5, 6-2.
In a correction from Thursday’s release Mackenzie White won her sixth straight match defeating Van Ginkel, 6-3, 6-0.
Emma Hayman won her second match of the weekend by dominating Pinchbeck, 6-1, 6-0.
Earning her 66th career singles win, Abou-Zekry defeated Suhajda in split sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Abou-Zekry ties Sandy Lukoski at the No. 15 spot for most career singles wins.
The Lobos will be back in action next Friday when they start conference play and take on UNLV on March 27 in San Diego. The Lobos play the SDSU Aztecs the next day, Saturday, March 28.
