Individual Standings After Day 1 ![]()
The University of New Mexico men’s golf team found itself sitting in fourth place after the first round at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif. after posting a 361. It took four hours and three Lobos – Steve Saunders, Jon Sauer and Jacob Lestishen – to post three sub-70 scores in the second round for UNM to make a big move to second place. The Lobos improved their first-round score by 13 strokes, posting a 348 in the second round.
Led by Saunders’ two 69-stroke rounds (3-under-par each), UNM sits at 11-under for the tournament, 12 strokes behind host San Diego State and two strokes better than anyone else in the field. At six-under, Saunders is tied for fourth place individually. Saunders’ 6-under trails co-leaders Matt Hoffenberg (SDSU, Blake Trimble (University of San Diego) and Dustin Morris (Colorado State), all three at 7-under.
Sauer posted a 73-68=141 (3-under) for the two rounds to find himself tied for ninth, while James Erkenbeck notched a 72-71=143 (1-under) and is tied for 13th. Lestishen (78-68=146), Nick Geyer (73-73=146) and Tom Carlson (74-72=146) are tied for 27th at 2-over.
Each of the six Lobos either matched or improved their first-round score – something coach Glen Millican was quick to point out.
“We had a good first round, but we could have played a little better,” said Millican. “Our second round was real solid. That was a great team effort to get us to where we are now. We had three guys shoot in the 60s. That put us in pretty good shape.”
