Albuquerque, N.M.-Senior Ola Abou-Zekry got her 64th career win earning her a spot on the Most Career Singles Wins for the University of New Mexico. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the Lobos a win as the women’s tennis team fell to Wichita State (10-2), 5-2 Saturday morning at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble. The Lobos are now 3-8 on the season.
Abou-Zekry started out on top in the first set leading Anna Egorova, 3-2. She let the lead slip away from and was down 3-4. Abou-Zekry and Egorova slugged it out but it was Abou-Zekry who came out on top winning the first set 7-5.
“Ola is playing very well,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. “She is being very consistent with her game.”
Abou-Zekry kept the momentum going and earned her 64th win with a 6-3 victory over Egorova.
Mackenzie White came out ready to play this morning. At the end of the first set with the winning point on the line it went back and forth between deuce and advantage. The advantage came in White’s favor and she put the set away at 6-4. In the second set White dominated Stephanie Dalmacio winning 6-1.
Mackenzie had a very good win today,” Kolankiewicz said. “She had a very tough opponent and I’m very proud of her.”
In doubles play the duo of Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman were down 1-5 and came back to win three games straight to make the match 4-5. Wichita State won the next came to stay up by two. The Lobos wouldn’t give up with out a fight. The came back to win the match 8-6.
“This was a great comeback for Ola and Emma,” Kolankiewicz said. “They are playing some very good tennis.”
The Lobos will hit the road and head to San Diego for the San Diego Team Tournament where they will face Mississippi on Wednesday, March 18.
