Corpus Christi, Texas – The 33rd-ranked University of New Mexico men’s tennis team defeated No. 73 Western Michigan, 4-1, in the opener of the HEB Tournament of Champions Team Tennis Classic, but fell 4-1 to No. 52 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lobos are now 8-2 on the season.
After Western Michigan captured the doubles point, the Lobos responded with four single wins. Senior Johnny Parkes, who is ranked 103rd in the nation, didn’t allow a point to Kevin Hayward, coming away with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 position. Fellow senior Graeme Kassautzki was just as dominate with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michael Calderone in the No. 2 slot. Freshman Ben Dunbar and Phil Anderson also picked up singles wins, in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Anderson holds a 6-1 singles record on the season.
In the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi match, only singles were competed. Parkes was the only Lobo to pick up a win, defeating Mikhail Pavlov 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot. Freshman Elliot Chang and Ben Dunbar almost came away with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Chang fell to Jose Zunino 7-6, 7-5 while Dunbar lost 7-5, 6-3.
The Lobos will wrap up the HEB Tournament with a match against South Alabama on Saturday, March 7, at 8 a.m. MST
