Albuquerque, N.M.-Sophomore Victoria Tessmar and NAU’s Orsi Golovics were the last ones on the court today and the win was riding on this match. Tessmar won the first set 6-4. In the second set Tessmar was down 1-4 but made a run for it and won the next three points making the set four all. It wasn’t enough Golovics won the set 6-4. With split sets Tessmar and Golovics went into the third set with the win for their respective team on the line. Unfortunately New Mexico just couldn’t hold on and they fell 4-3 to NAU (3-6) today at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble.

New Mexico is now 2-7 on the season

In other singles play Ola Abou-Zekry dominated. With the match at 2-0 New Mexico in the first set, Kim Van Ginkel hit a soft overhand at the top of the court to make Abou-Zekry sprint across the court to try and get the win. Abou-Zekry was able to volley and win the game and keep her strong lead. Abou-Zekry won the set 6-0.

Abou-Zekry continued her domination in the second set winning 6-1.

“I haven’t had in a win in awhile, we haven’t had a win in awhile,” Abou-Zekry said. “These wins today felt good.”

Emma Hayman made her mark on the court today dominating the first set against Leslie Vial winning 6-0. In the second set Hayman was down 1-4 and came back to win the set 6-4.

Mackenzie White also notched a win today defeating Edit Suhajda, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman battled their way to a win. The duo was down 0-3 but got back in winning the next two games to make the match 2-3. Later on New Mexico was down 3-5 with the advantage. With an overhand to the opposite side of the court Hayman made the match 4-5. Abou-Zekry and Hayman won the next three points to make the lead seven games to five. Suhajda and Golovics weren’t done yet the won the next game making the match 7-6. With the match on the line New Mexico was down 15-40. New Mexico dominated their way to get the game at 40-40 and had the advantage in their favor. The Lobos won the match, 8-6, with a shot up the middle.

The Lobos will be back in action Sunday, March 8 against rival New Mexico State.
