Former Lobos Charlie Beljan and Michael Letzig have been selected to the Mountain West Conference Men’s Golf 10th Anniversary team.
“It’s great to see Charlie and Michael get recognized,” said head coach Glenn Millican. “It’s a great representation of our program to see two of our former golfers get acknowledged as two of the best in the history of the conference.”
Beljan (UNM `04-07) and Letzig (’00-03) were each named MWC Player of the Year as seniors and MWC Freshman of the Year. Letzig was a Freshman All-American in 2000 and second-team All-American in 2003. Among his four tournament wins during his duration at UNM, Letzig won the 2003 MWC championship and the NCAA West Regional. Letzig is currently on the PGA Tour and has a top-25 finish already this season, taking 12th at the FBR Open last month. Beljan, also second-team All-American in 2007, has been a member of the PGA Tour for the past three years.
Beljan (72.36) and Letzig (72.51) rank second and third, respectively, in career low stroke average at UNM. Letzig ranks second at UNM for individual low score for 54 holes at 199, with Beljan tied with three others for third at 201.
“Both dominated the conference their senior years,” said Millican. “It’s great to see both go on to become successful pros and being able to make a living playing golf.”
The 10-member team was selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel and an online fan poll. With the selection of Beljan and Letzig, UNM represents is one of three conference teams to have multiple golfers selected, along with UNLV, Brigham Young and San Diego State. New Mexico has captured four of the first nine conference team titles.
