ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico volleyball program has announced its 2009 Lobo Volleyball Summer Camps schedule. All camps will be held at the Johnson Center on the campus of UNM. Registration is available online at GoLobos.com. Campers who register by March 1 can save $20 off of the cost of Little Lobos, Individual Skills, Advanced Skills, Setter and Libero Camps. Team Camp participants can save $50 on the team entry fee if they register before March 1.
“We are thrilled with the success of our summer camps program,” said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. “We added a setter and libero camp last year that was very well attended and we expect these sessions to continue to get better and better each summer! Players should register early because each session fills up fast.”
New Mexico Volleyball will be hosting six different camps during June and July. Camps will begin on June 15-19 with Little Lobos and Individual Skills Camps, and wrap up with Team Camp on July 24-26. A certified trainer will be in attendance at each camp.
Little Lobos Camp – June 15-19 – K-5th grade – $135.00
Little Lobos Camp is open to all children who will be entering kindergarten through 5th grade next fall. The camp staff will cover the basics of individual skills including passing, setting, hitting and serving. The clinics will also provide campers an opportunity to experience team skills and play.
Individual Skills Camp – June 15-19 – 5th-8th grades – $260.00
Individual Skills Camp participants will receive small group instruction, tactical knowledge, and repetition. Campers will have opportunities to utilize their skills in competitive settings. Players of ANY skill level are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided each day.
Adult Camp – July 7-9 – Adults 18 years of age or older – $60.00
Adult Camp will be separated into different divisions – men, women, and co-ed. This camp is open to all adults who are interested in learning more about the game of volleyball, refining skills, and competing in a structured environment. Enjoy three nights of instruction on setting, passing, hitting, serving, serve reception, defense, court coverage, tactical knowledge and strategy during game play. There will be competitive drills as well as full games. On the last day of camp, campers are invited to join the UNM coaching staff for a social gathering.
Advanced Skills Camp – July 13-16 – 7th-12th grades – $360.00 (commuter) / $435.00 (resident) // Late Registration (after July 1): $385 (commuter) / $460.00 (resident)
Advanced Camp will provide campers with small group instruction and opportunities to utilize their skills in competitive settings. Players of all levels can learn and improve their skills and gain confidence in competitive game play. The coaching staff will stress individual and team play, while concentrating on the fundamentals of setting, passing, hitting, serving, serve reception, defense, and court coverage. Along with focusing on fundamental skills, the staff will focus on the tactical knowledge of a particular position and strategy during game play. Campers also will have the opportunity to experience college life as a resident in the dorms. As a resident, all of your meals will be paid for while participating in the camp. As a commuter, you will arrive and depart each day of camp (meals will be provided between sessions). In addition to great instruction, campers will receive a UNM volleyball, and Lobo Volleyball t-shirt.
Setter and Libero Camp – July 17-19 – 7th-12th grades – $190.00 (commuter) / $260.00 (resident) // Late Registration (after July 1): $215.00 (commuter) / $285.00 (resident)
UNM is adding a new camp this summer open to players that want to train at the Setter and Libero positions. Campers will have the option to stay in the dorms as a resident camper. Setters will be trained in every aspect of setting, from technique to strategy. Liberos will be taken through numerous ball control drills, proper technique in serve receive and defensive drills.
Team Camp – July 24-26 – High School teams – Before July 1 – $100.00 per player and $150 non-refundable team entry fee / / After July 1 – $125.00 per player and $175.00 team entry fee
Team Camp is designed for high school teams looking to compete at a high level prior to their preseason training. Teams will train and participate in a very competitive atmosphere. The camp will begin on July 24th and finish by noon on July 26th. On the first two days of camp, teams will have a training session in the morning or afternoon with a UNM camp coach, who will lead the team through drills. Pool play competition will take place in the evenings. After two rounds of pool play, teams will be seeded into two separate brackets, Cherry or Silver, for a single-elimination tournament on the 26th.
