Evanston, Ill.- The University of New Mexico (1-2) lost to No.1 Northwestern (1-0) today in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Tournament 7-0. New Mexico will now play in the consolation match Sunday, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. mountain standard time against the loser of the Tulsa, Washington State match.
Senior Mackenzie White fell to No. 28 Georgia Rose, 6-1, 6-0. Fellow senior Ola Abou-Zekry fell in a competitive match against No. 24 Samantha Murray, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Manumea Durie lost to Nazlie Ghazal at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Victoria Tessmar made her season debut falling to Stacey Lee 6-0, 6-1. Senior Maria Sotirchos fell at the No. 5 spot to Keri Robinson 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Emma Hayman rounded out singles play, and was the last one on the court fighting for a win against Lauren Lui. Hayman had the lead in the second set 5-3 and let the lead slip away from. Hayman came back to make the match 6-5 New Mexico but lost in a tiebreaker 7-3.
New Mexico came out strong in doubles play leading early in each match. The duo of Abou-Zekry and Sotirchos lost a close match to Lui and Maria Mosolova, 8-5.
“We got off to a great start in all three doubles,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. “We played very well. We pushed them and gave them a good run for their money.”
Hayman and White lost to Rose and Elena Chernyakova, 8-3. Anya Villanueva-Forte and Ashley Bonner fell to Murray and Robinson 8-4.
The Lobos will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m.
