COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 41st-ranked University of New Mexico men’s tennis team dropped a close match to No. 30 Virginia Tech, 4-3, in the first round of the ITA Team Indoor Tournament.
The Lobos fall to 2-1 on the season and will meet up with No. 64 Stetson at 7 a.m. MST on Sunday, Feb. 1, in their second dual match of the weekend.
UNM took the doubles point with wins from Johnny Parkes/Miles Bugby and Graeme Kassautzki/Joe Wood at the No.1 and No. 2 spots. Both duos won by a score of 8-5 to help UNM gain a 1-0 advantage and stay undefeated in doubles points on the season. Parkes/Bugby took down Nicholas Delgado and Luka Somen, who are ranked 20th in the country, to improve to 3-0 in doubles.
The Lobos lost three matches to start singles play. Freshmen Carl Ho was defeated at the No. 5 position by Brandon Corace while fellow freshman Phil Anderson lost to Patrick Daciek, 4-6, 3-6, at the No. 6 spot. Virginia Tech’s YoAnn Re defeated Bugby in No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
It came down to the remaining three singles matches for the Lobos to take the win. Kassautzki prevailed at the No. 2 position against No.100 Peter Graber and Parkes improved to 6-0 in spring play overall with a win over Delgado at No. 1. Freshman Ben Dunbar lost to Luka Somen in the No. 4 flight, as the Hokies took the 4-3 win.
UNM faces No. 64 Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 7 a.m. MST.
