Lobo Men’s Golf at Arizona Invitational Notes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico Men’s Golf team opens its spring season this Monday, Feb. 2 by taking part in the 2009 Arizona Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona.
The tournament will be played at the Arizona National Golf Club. Other schools in the field include Tennessee, California, and Pepperdine as well as Mountain West Conference foes Brigham Young, San Diego State and UNLV. All told there are 15 schools as well as two squads from host Arizona are competing.
“It’s a good tournament,” said Lobo’s head coach Glen Millican. “We’ve started at the event almost every year. I think we’ve only missed this event only once or twice in the existence of the tournament. It’s always a great tournament for us.”
UNM won the Invitational in 2005, posting a three-round total of 840.
The Arizona National Golf Club is a Par 71, 6,900-yard course. Teams will play a practice round on Sunday. The first two rounds of the three-round event will be played on Monday with the final round coming the following day. The expected start time is 8:00 a.m. MST on both days with a Shotgun Start and continuous play format in use.
“It’s a good course for us,” said Millican. “It’s a course that requires that you keep the ball in play but it’s not overly long… it’s a good chance for our guys to get off to a good start in the spring.”
