TOWSON, Md. – University of New Mexico senior linebacker Zach Arnett was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team this morning. Arnett, who expects to graduate in May with a degree in History, has compiled a 3.88 grade point average. The Albuquerque La Cueva product recorded a career-high 92 tackles, including 11.0 for loss, and is tied for the national lead with six forced fumbles.
New Mexico has earned four Academic All-America awards over the past three years – the best run in program history. Senior linebacker Cody Kase was also a first team selection for the Lobos last fall, while senior center Vince Natali earned second team recognition.
Five of the school’s eight Academic All-America awards came under head coach Rocky Long’s watch. Long resigned on Nov. 17 after 11 seasons at his alma mater.
The 5-10, 205-pound Arnett played in 47 games in his four-year Lobo career, racking up 200 tackles, 19.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. He helped UNM rank 36th nationally in rushing defense in 2008 – his first year as a starter.
The Academic All-America team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
