Lobo men’s soccer team fails to get at-large bid to NCAA Tournament
University of New Mexico men’s soccer senior Chris Wright earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for his performance in the Lobos’ wins over Air Force and No. 25 Denver last week. New Mexico finished the season with an 11-6-2 record and in second place in the MPSF with a 7-3-0 conference mark.
Wright, a 6-5 forward from Fair Oaks, Calif., scored a pair of goals in a 4-1 win over Air Force on Friday, Nov. 14. He also drew a penalty kick in a regular season-ending 1-0 win over MPSF Champion Denver, the Pioneers’ only conference setback of the year.
Wright finishes his Lobo career with 26 goals, ranking fifth on UNM’s all-time chart. He also racked up 62 points to finish seventh all time at UNM.
For Wright, it was his second MPSF Player of the Week honor this season and the fifth of his career.
New Mexico failed to advance to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time since 2001. The Lobos lose three seniors, but return a solid core of eight starters for the 2009 campaign.
