Western New Mexico Head Coach

“It’s exciting. (The Pit) is a historic place and the players love it, especially the kids who are from the New Mexico area. It’s good that it doesn’t count because most of the time we probably going to come out on the loosing end. But it’s a lot of fun to be able to play against a team like UNM and against Coach Alford. I have a lot of respect for him, he is a great player and he as done a lot as a coach.”

Opening Statement
“There were a lot of things I liked today. I think Western New Mexico is going to do some good things this year and we wish them the best. It’s a good test for us out of the gate…I liked what we saw in terms of taking care of the ball. Our last scrimmage out we had over 20 turnovers, and tonight we only had 11 with 23 assists. That tells me we moved the ball and did some good things. We had quick shots a little too much. Overall, I was pretty pleased with the scrimmage. I thought we did some good things.”

On the game
“We have to look at the tape and figure out what we need to work on. We got 15 offensive rebounds so that’s something that glares at me. We held them to 30 percent shooting and below 60 points. I think we did some good things defensively. We were pretty efficient offensively; we just didn’t get to the line enough for me. We will look at the combinations on tape. I think we are 11 deep right now.”

On the players
“Roman didn’t miss a shot or a free-throw; he had eight rebounds, six were offensive. Roman did some awfully good things. I thought Tony responded. He was more aggressive in this game and he did things we needed him to do. I thought Toppert did some good things like shooting, Phillip really did some good things. I really like the freshman. All in all I was very please with all of them today.”

On fan support
“I can’t say thank you enough to the fans. This is an exhibition game in the middle of the afternoon and it’s a beautiful day. There are a lot of things you could be doing, and for 11,000 fans to come in here and watch that and support us is great. I really appreciate this because we really need something like this before we get going. We need a lot of support from the fans for these freshman. I really appreciate the support that we get.”
