The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team concluded the first day of the Jack Taylor Classic in Boise, Idaho. It was a tough day in singles play for the Lobos, who only won two of their eight matches.

However, the Lobos finished strong in doubles play, winning three out of their four matches against Utah. Mackenzie White and Emma Hayman teamed up for a win against Provancha and Manghan winning 8-4. Victoria Tessmar and partner Anya Villanueva-Forte beat Walsh and Johnson 8-4. Jessica Gardefjord and Manumea Durie also won their match against Takuafa and Bourdages 8-4.

“Even though we lost several close matches today I am excited to see that we dominated all of them. The tools are there we now need to discipline our game. The potential is there to do great things if we continue to work diligently hard,” associate head coach Roy Cañada said.

White won her singles match as well against Aleksandra Oprea from Washington State University 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Gardefjord was also victorious in singles play winning 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 against Dee Dee Nelson from Utah.

The Lobos will start day two of the Jack Taylor Classic Saturday, Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m.
