The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the 2008 Baylor Intercollegiate in sixth place today. The Lobos shot their lowest round of the tournament, 6-over 290, in today’s final 18 to finish at 29-over (292-299-290=881). 22nd-ranked Texas A&M set the pace at the event, posting a 54-hole total of 870 (288-289-293, +18).
The Lobos were led again today by senior Jon Sauer. He shot an even-par 71 in his final round to post a 4-over 217 (76-70-71) for the tournament. Sauer was 2-over through 13 holes today. He went on to card birdies at 14 and 17 and tied for ninth in the individual race.
SMU’s James Kwon garnered individual medalist honors after firing a 1-under 212 for the tournament. Kwon, who shot a 3-over 74 in the first round, carded back-to-back rounds of 2-under 69 to win the Baylor Intercollegiate. Lamar’s Justin Harding and Oklahoma’s Riley Pumphrey finished tied for second at even-par 213. Andrew Landry of Arkansas and Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M came in fourth at 1-over 214.
Senior Parker Pemberton shot a 1-over 72 in the final round to tie for 21st overall at 9-over (73-77-72=222). He was 2-under after a birdie on No. 14, but a triple-bogey on the par-4 15th hole pushed him over par for his round. His 54-hole total of 222 and his tied for 21st overall were both season lows.
Senior Steve Saunders also had a top-30 showing in the event. He shot a 2-over 73 in the final round to post an 11-over 224 (77-74-73) for the tournament. He was 4-over through 16 holes today, but birdied 17 and 18 to move to 2-under today.
Junior Nick Geyer shot a 3-over 74 in his final round. He finished 13-over (71-81-74=226) and tied for 35th overall. Freshman James Erkenbeck was also 13-over (72-78-76=226) following a final round 76 today.
No. 22 Texas A&M claimed the team title with an 18-over 870. The Aggies were 9-over after day one, but matched it with a 9-over 293 in the final round Tuesday. Oklahoma and Lamar finished tied for second at 20-over 872, followed by No. 14 Arkansas in fourth at 21-over 873 and No. 17 Baylor in fifth with a 23-over 875.
This was the final event of the fall season for the Lobos. New Mexico will be back in action on Feb. 2-3 at the 2009 PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
