The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first 36 holes of the Baylor Intercollegiate in sixth place today. The Lobos are currently 23-over par (292-299=591) and 14 strokes off the pace set by No. 22 Texas A&M (288-289=577, +9). Senior Jon Sauer leads the Lobos with a two-round total of 146 (76-70=146, +4) and is tied for 12th place in the individual race.

Playing in cold and windy conditions at the 7,068-yard, par-71 Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas, the Lobos are in the middle of a strong group of 12 teams. Texas A&M’s Bronson Burgoon leads the individuals with a 3-under 139 (68-71).

Sauer opened the day with a 5-over 76 in his first round. He was 3-over after his first two holes, but held it together for the rest of his morning 18. He posted the Lobos’ round of the day with a 1-under 70 in the afternoon. He birdied two of his last six holes to tie his season low.

Freshman James Erkenbeck and senior Parker Pemberton are both 8-over and tied for 25th after the first two rounds. Erkenbeck shot a 72 in the first round and finished with a 78 in the afternoon. Pemberton had a 73 in the first round and was cruising at 2-under through six holes in his second round. However, he gave back eight strokes over the next seven holes to finish with a 76. Pemberton was up-and-down throughout his second round, posting three double-bogeys and five bogeys against two eagles and a birdie.

Senior Steve Saunders is currently tied for 29th at 9-over (77-74=151). He shot a 6-over 77 in the first round that included eight bogeys and two birdies. He carded a 74 in the second round.

Junior Nick Geyer is 10-over at 152 (71-81) after two rounds and tied for 32nd. He opened the day with an even-par 71 in the first round, finishing with two birdies in his final five holes. His second round was a little more difficult as he carded an 81 in the afternoon.

The final round of the Baylor Intercollegiate begins tomorrow with tee times at 7:00 a.m. (M.D.T.). Live scoring will again be available via GolfStat on GoLobos.com.
