ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It was Volley For The Cure Night in Johnson Center as the University of New Mexico beat UNLV, 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 on Thursday night in front of a crowd dressed in pink. The win improved the Lobos to 6-3 in conference competition and 16-4 on the season. 16 wins ties the Lobos’ 2007 record for wins in a season since the Mountain West Conference formed in 1999.

The Lobos led the first set 3-0 off the serve of Lisa Meeter before the Rebels were able to tie the score 4-4. All-America candidate Jeanne Fairchild recorded seven of her team-high 16 kills to finish the set 25-13.

In the second set, Meeter pounded in one of her eight match kills to give the Lobos the ball before serving UNM to a 6-1 lead. After a timeout by UNLV, Fairchild killed the ball to end the set 25-19.

UNM traded points with UNLV to start the third set before jumping out to an 11-5 lead. Rose Morris had five kills in the set to lead the Lobos to a 25-18 win.

Morris finished second for UNM with 11 kills. Jade Michaelsen finished the match with 41 assists while Gayle Tripp and Sarah Kwasigroch each had 13 digs. Anna Lehne led the front row defense with seven blocks.

The Lobos return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 against San Diego State. Match time at Johnson Center is set for 1 p.m.
