UP NEXT: The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team takes a break from Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action this weekend to take on PAC-10 foe Stanford at the UNM Soccer Complex. Game time is set for Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. (M.D.T.). All of the action can be followed through GameTracker and All-Access video on GoLobos.com.

There is a special $1 ticket promotion for all youth soccer club members who wear their team jersey to the Stanford match on Friday. There will also be a Lobo hat giveaway for the game. Friday’s match is sponsored by Route 66 Casino Hotel, Comcast and Univision. The Lobo women start off the night against San Diego State at 5:30 p.m.

New Mexico is currently 6-5-2 on the season and 3-2-0 in MPSF action. Stanford brings in a 3-7-2 mark and is 1-3-1 in PAC-10 play. The Cardinal has wins over Cornell (2-0), San Francisco (1-0) and UCLA (2-1) in 2008. Their lone tie was a 1-1 contest at San Jose State in the season opener.

Stanford is coming off a tough 1-0 overtime loss to No. 13 Cal last Saturday at home. The Cardinal shutout the Bears for 90 minutes, but gave up the game-winner just two minutes into overtime. Stanford junior keeper John Moore kept the match close, making nine saves on the night.

Sophomore Bobby Warshaw leads the Cardinal in scoring with three goals and an assist on the year. He was a second-team All-PAC-10 selection last season. Fellow sophomore Ryan Thomas leads the team with three assists. Moore has a 0.96 goals-against-average for Stanford. He has played every minute between the pipes this season.

New Mexico is led by junior Justin Davis’s 10 points on three goals and four assists. Senior Chris Wright leads the squad with four goals on the year. Sophomore Eric Staver has played every minute in the net and has a 1.17 g.a.a. and three shutouts in 2008.

The Lobos are currently tied with UNLV (8-4-1, 3-2-0 MPSF) for second place in the MPSF race. Each team has nine points and trail Denver’s (7-5-0, 5-0-0 MPSF) 15 points. This is the off week for conference play. The only other MPSF team in action this weekend is the Pioneers hosting Alabama A&M on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1:00 p.m.

RECAPPING LAST WEEKEND: The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 match at UNLV on Friday, Oct. 17. New Mexico gave up two goals in less than a minute in the second half and could not complete a comeback on the road tonight. With the loss, New Mexico snapped a three-game winning streak and fell to 6-5-2 on the year and 3-2-0 in MPSF action.

LOBOS SHORTHANDED IN UNLV LOSS: The Lobos played without three starters in their loss at UNLV last weekend. Juniors Simon Ejdemyr, P.J. Wilson and Euan Holden were all out of the game with injuries and illnesses. New Mexico should be at full strength against Stanford for the first time since the Portland game on Sept. 19.

DAVIS AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN SCORING: Junior Justin Davis currently has 10 points on three goals and four assists in 2008. He is third in the MPSF in scoring with 0.91 points per game. His four assists also tied for third while his three goals is tied for ninth.

LOBO OFFENSE LEADING THE WAY: New Mexico’s 20 goals on the season leads the MPSF. UNM also leads the league in scoring with 58 points and is second in assists with 18 on the year.

LOBOS TOUGH AT HOME UNDER FISHBEIN: The Lobo men’s soccer team has posted a 26-2-1 mark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at the UNM Soccer Complex under head coach Jeremy Fishbein. The only two losses at home under Fishbein came against UNLV (2-0 on Oct. 18, 2003) and San Jose State (3-2 (OT) on Oct. 16, 2005). UNM has won 85% of their matches overall in six years under Fishbein at the UNM Soccer Complex, posting a 50-7-5 mark in his tenure.

IN THE RANKINGS: The Lobos are out of all of the rankings for the first time since the start of the 2004 season. It is the fifth week in a row New Mexico has not been ranked. UNM is receiving votes in the NSCAA Far West Region poll.

EJDEMYR NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Junior Simon Ejdemyr was named the MPSF co-Player of the Week after scoring goal and assist against Sacramento State on Oct. 12. It is the second time in Ejdemyr’s career he has earned Player of the Week honors.

DAVIS NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Junior Justin Davis was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Week after netting the game-winner against No. 2 Akron on Friday, Sept. 12. Davis has a goal and three assists on the season. It was his first career player of the week honors.

LOBOS AGAINST THE TOP-5: New Mexico’s 1-0 win over No. 2 Akron was their fourth over a top-5 team in school history. UNM is 4-8-2 all-time against teams ranked in the top-5, including two wins and a tie against the last three that visited the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos are 2-3-2 in seven matches against the top-5 in head coach Jeremy Fishbein’s tenure.

NEW MEXICO WAS STRONG WITH A LEAD: Coming into 2008, the Lobos were tough to beat when scoring first or leading at the half. In head coach Jeremy Fishbein’s first six years, New Mexico was 76-3-7 when finding the back of the net first and 48-1-2 when holding a halftime lead. This year, UNM has struggled in comparison, posting a 4-2-2 mark when scoring first and 3-1-2 record when leading at the half.

LOBOS BOAST THIRD HIGHEST WINNING % SINCE 2004: The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team boasts the second highest winning percentage in Division I over the last three years. The Lobos are 67-16-14 (.763) since the start of 2004. Here is a look at the top teams in the nation based on winning percentage since 2004.

WRIGHT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN: Lobo senior Chris Wright was named preseason 2nd Team All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com. Wright, a 6-5 forward from Fair Oaks, Calif., was the 2007 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year and the league’s leading scorer with 12 goals and four assists. Wright is listed as a midfielder on CollegeSoccerNews.com’s list, but will primarily fill the forward spot for the Lobos’ this season. His 24 career goals are currently fifth all time at UNM.
