Final Stats

The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 match at UNLV tonight. New Mexico gave up two goals in less than a minute in the second half and could not complete a comeback on the road tonight. With the loss, New Mexico snaps a three-game winning streak and falls to 6-5-2 on the year and 3-2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action. UNLV iproves to 8-4-1 and 3-2-0 in MPSF play.

The Lobos dominated play in the opening period, outshooting UNLV 9-4 while putting six shots on goal. However, New Mexico was unable to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes and the game was scoreless at the half.

UNLV got on the board in the 53rd minute when Stephen Sifuentes fired a shot that deflected off a Lobo defender into the net. It was his third goal of the season. UNLV came right back less than sixty seconds later as Daniel Cruz drove into the box and hit a shot to the top left corner for his fifth goal of the year.

Down 2-0 New Mexico tried to mount a comeback in the final 30 minutes. They finally got on the board in the 81st minute when senior Chris Wright scored on a header off a corner-kick from junior Justin Davis. It was Wright’s team-leading fourth goal of the season and Davis’s team-high four assist of the year.

The goal pulled the game to 2-1 but UNM was unable to find the equalizing goal. New Mexico returns home next Friday, Oct. 24, for a 7:30 p.m. (MT) match against Pac-10 foe Stanford at the UNM Soccer Complex.
