It was a good day for singles play for the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team. The Lobos advanced two players to the next round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals.
Senior Ola Abou-Zerky defeated Nataliya Shatkovskaya from OSU 7-6, 7-6. Fellow senior Mackenzie White also notched a win, defeating Wichita State’s Lenore Lazaroiu6-1, 6-1.
Abou-Zerky and partner Maria Sotirchos won two of their doubles matches today. The duo beat conference rival Jones and Carney from BYU 9-8.
“It’s always great beating BYU, we played a good match against a good young team and were happy to clinch it when it came down to the wire,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said.
Unfortunately the pair fell to Oklahoma State’s Joanne Karaitiana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya 8-4 in the 2nd round.
Meanwhile at the UNM Individuals Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Emma Hayman and partner Anya Villanueva-Forte came away with a victory defeating Chermal and Sarkis from Air Force 8-1. The duo will play the team of Guiggioli and Ritchie from Missouri tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Action continues tomorrow starting around 9 a.m.
