The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team will conclude fall play this weekend in two Thursday-Sunday tournaments. Seniors Ola Abou-Zerky, Maria Sotirchos and Mackenzie White travel to Salt Lake City for the Intercollegiate Tennis Regional Tournament while the rest of the team welcomes six schools to the UNM Tennis Complex for the UNM Individuals Invitational.
The collegiate field at the UNM Individuals Invitational includes: Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Air Force, Western New Mexico and UTEP
Abou-Zerky is the only ranked player for UNM, coming in at No. 103 in the preseason poll.
LAST TIME AT THE UNM INDIVIDUALS INVITE
– Last year at the UNM Individuals Invite, the Lobos won 14 of 18 in singles play after starting off the invite 10-0. Jennifer Ryba and Victoria Tessmar both made it to finals in their flights with Tessmar coming away with the win over a Northern Arizona player.
LAST TIME AT ITA REGIONALS
– Last year at the ITA regionals Sandra Zmak advanced to the finals in consolation play before falling to Denver’s Annette Aksdal 7-6, 6-4.
JACK TAYLOR CLASSIC
– At the Jack Taylor Classic in Boise, Idaho senior Ola Abou-Zerky finished strong, winning two of her three singles matches and two of her three doubles matches with partner Maria Sotirchos. Sophomore Emma Hayman was solid as well, taking two of three matches. Victoria Tessmar teamed up with partner Anya Villanueva-Forte to win two of their three doubles matches. Jessica Gardefjord and partner Manumea Durie also went two of three in doubles play.
LOBOS THIS SEASON
– The Lobo women’s tennis team consists of three seniors, four sophomores and welcomes four freshmen. Head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz enters her 24th season at UNM and holds an overall record of 346-222. Roy Cañada begins his 13th season as assistant head coach and has a record of 213-112. Gui Dupont joins the team this season as a volunteer assistant coach.
LOBOS SCHEDULE
– Spring play for the women’s tennis team will start on Jan. 19 at home against LSU.
