The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished 12th at the 2008 Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, Ill., today. The Lobos shot a final round 298 to finish 37-over (292-299-298=889) at the par-71, 7,067-yard North Shore Country Club.
Junior Brandon Putnam had the low round for the Lobos today. He posted a 1-over 72 to finish the event at 18-over (77-82-72=231) and tied for 67th. He did have an exciting finish in his third round. After starting on No. 10, Putnam was closing his 18 holes on the front nine when he made back-to-back eagles on No. 5 and No. 6. He holed out from 120 yards with a pitching wedge on the fifth hole and dropped in an 8-iron from 146 yards on No. 6.
Junior Nick Geyer and freshman James Erkenbeck both finished the 54-hole event at 8-over. Geyer shot a final round 76 (70-75-76=221) while Erkenbeck finished with a 73 (75-73-73=221) in the third round.
Senior Jon Sauer posted a 78 in his final 18 holes today. He finished tied for 54th overall at 13-over (72-76-78=226). Fellow senior Steve Saunders tied for 58th following his 77 today. He shot a 14-over 227 (75-75-77) for the tournament.
The Windon was won by Illinois who posted a 9-under 843 (276-283-284). Indiana was the only other team under par at 848 (286-281-281, -4). Indiana’s Jorge Campillo won the individual title with an 8-under 205 (72-70-63).
The Lobos’ next event will be the Baylor Invitational at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 27-28.
