The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first day of the Windon Memorial Classic tied for seventh place in the 15-team event. Three Lobos still have work left to do in their second rounds but play was cancelled due to darkness at the 7,067-yard, par-71 North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
Freshman James Erkenbeck leads the Lobos in the clubhouse with a 6-over 148 (75-73) after 36 holes. He is tied for 38th in the individual race. Erkenbeck was up-and-down throughout his first round, posting seven bogeys and three birdies on his was to a 75. He went out in 39 in his second round, but came back with a 2-under 34 to post a 2-over 73.
Junior Brandon Putnam also finished 36 holes for the Lobos today. He is in 79th place at 17-over (77-82-159). Seniors Steve Saunders and Jon Sauer and junior Nick Geyer will all finish their last three host of the second round at 6:30 a.m. (M.D.T.) Monday morning.
Geyer is currently tied for 18th at 2-over. He shot a 1-under 70 in his first round and is 3-over in his second 18 holes. Geyer has two birdies on the back nine of his second round after going out in 40.
Sauer is tied for 23rd at 3-over after an opening round of 72. He was 2-under through 15 in his first round, but double-bogeyed 16 and bogeyed 17 to finish at a 1-over. He is currently 2-over in his second round after bogeying 15.
Saunders posted a 75 in his first 18 holes that included back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18. He is tied for 38th at 6-over and is 2-over through 15 holes of his second round.
New Mexico trails Illinois (276-283=559, -9) by 26 strokes in the team race. The Illini’s Matt Hoffman leads the individuals at 7-under (65-70=135). Illinois is currently the only team under-par in the event. Play will conclude with the third and final round on Monday.
