The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at Denver 1-0 today. The Lobos were without three of its top players in the match tonight and could not hold off the host Pioneers. Denver scored in the 51st minute for the only goal of the match, moving New Mexico to 3-4-2 on the season and 0-1-0 in MPSF play.

The Lobos were without juniors Justin Davis, P.J. Wilson and Zach Tierney – all starters – who were all serving red-card suspensions from previous games. New Mexico hung tough in the first half, holding Denver to six shots while posting four of their own. UNM was able to keep the Pioneers off the board and went into halftime scoreless.

Denver came out in the second period by picking up the offensive tempo. Collin Audley took a free-kick in the 51st minute that rebounded out to Colin Jones who put away the only score of the match. The Lobos tried to get the equalizer in the final 40 minutes, but only managed four more shots the rest of the way.

New Mexico is now winless in its last four matches while Denver improves to 3-5-0 and 1-0-0 in MPSF play. UNM next travels to Air Force for a 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) kickoff against the Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 5.
